Edwin Tanji was Maui News city editor from 2000 through 2008, writing Haku Mo'olelo (writing stories) as a way to talk to readers about the editor's thinking on stories that were published, often with references to journalistic history and principles. After retiring from the News, he continued the column as commentary on local, national and international stories, adding citations of data and other information not included in published stories – all for the purpose of providing more points of view on issues. Prior to joining The Maui News, he was Maui Bureau chief for the Honolulu Advertiser for 27 years, reporting on events and communities on the islands of Lanai, Molokai, Kahoolawe and Maui. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from the University of Hawaii Manoa and began his professional career in 1968 as a reporter/copy editor for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. hakumoolelo@earthlink.net
